House of Wingz at the Capital of Dance Festival

In July, House of Wingz proudly took over the main stage on Blackpool’s iconic Comedy Carpet as part of the month-long Capital of Dance Festival. Across two unforgettable days, we brought the community together through workshops, performances, and battles that celebrated the joy and diversity of dance.

Day One: Workshops, Performances, and Freestyle Energy

The first day was all about participation and performance. We kicked things off with a TikTok dance workshop, where the House of Wingz crew taught the public some of the most popular moves from social media. It was incredible to see families, friends, and visitors of all ages joining in and discovering the fun of dance in a new way.

But the highlight of the day was the Afro Dance workshop led by Ini Iconic. This session was pure joy- teaching authentic, feel-good Afro dance moves that had Blackpool's Comedy Carpet buzzing with rhythm and energy. Watching Blackpool residents and visitors embrace Afro dance and culture was truly inspiring. The workshop wasn’t just about movement; it was about connection, celebration, and learning.

We were thrilled to collaborate with Inimfon and Franklin, whose performance brought even more depth and vibrancy to the day. Their artistry helped us shine a spotlight on Afro dance as a vital part of the festival, and we couldn’t be more excited to have worked with them on this project.

The day also featured a powerful performance from Sadler’s Wells National Youth Dance Company, which included three local dancers- Dylan, Orson and Blake- from House of Wingz, as well as a showcase from our own crew. Between performances, the stage transformed into a space for dance jams and freestyles, encouraging the public to step up, move, and express themselves.

Day Two: Battles and Hip Hop Culture

The second day was dedicated to the raw energy of dance battles- a true celebration of hip hop culture. Hosted by Freefly Crew and Sam Bell from House of Wingz, with epic beats and visuals provided by DJ Woody, the battles brought Blackpool's iconic Comedy Carpet to life. The crowd packed- witnessing dancers go head-to-head, showcasing skill, creativity, and passion in every round.

Celebrating Dance, Culture, and Community

House of wingz weekend take over at the Capital of Dance Festival was more than just an event- it was a celebration of community, culture, and creativity. From TikTok trends to Afro dance traditions, from freestyle jams to hip hop battles, the two days captured the spirit of dance in all its forms.

For us at House of Wingz, the Afro Dance workshop was a defining moment. Seeing people in Blackpool embrace Afro dance and culture for the first time , guided by Ini Iconic, Inimfon, and Franklin, was a reminder of why we do what we do: to bring people together through movement, music, and shared experience.
