House of Wingz: Listening, Creating & Connecting- Researching the Shore Project

This summer, House of Wingz took to the streets of South Shore, focusing on the Waterloo Road area, with a mission that was simple but powerful: to listen. We wanted to understand how local residents feel about Blackpool today honestly, openly, and without pressure so that their voices could shape future initiatives aimed at improving perceptions of the town.

A “For Us, By Us” Approach

At House of Wingz, we believe in working with communities, not imposing ideas on them. That’s why our research project was rooted in creativity and culture. Instead of handing out questionnaires or asking people to tick boxes, we brought music, dance, skating, and performance directly to Waterloo Road on several busy summer dates.

By creating a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere, we encouraged residents to share their thoughts in a relaxed and natural way. Conversations flowed more easily when people felt at ease, surrounded by energy and creativity rather than formality.

The Team Behind the Project

Our senior team- Inimfon, Franklin, Julia, Orson, Blake, and Luke- led the way, guiding younger members Jack, Scarlett, and Brogan. Together, they learned how to hold space for meaningful conversations, ensuring that residents felt safe and respected while sharing their views.

This intergenerational collaboration was at the heart of the project: experienced leaders mentoring younger creatives, while everyone worked together to connect with the community.

What Came Out of It

The research won't just stay on paper. One of the most exciting outcomes will be the creation of a brand-new mural artwork right on Waterloo Road, designed in direct response to what residents told us. This mural is a reflection of community voices, a symbol of pride, and a reminder of what’s possible when creativity meets collaboration.

Beyond the mural, the insights gathered will help us leverage further funding and support for South Shore. Our goal is to improve facilities, opportunities, and investment in the area, guided by the very people who live there.

A Glimpse of What’s Possible

The crew did an incredible job transforming Waterloo Road into a space of joy, dialogue, and imagination. By blending culture with conversation, we showed how research can be an experience that uplifts, inspires, and empowers.

This project is just the beginning. With the voices of South Shore residents at the centre, we’re excited to keep building initiatives that reflect the community’s needs and dreams.
